Since the mid 1980s Williamson Truck & Haul have been successfully running their freight business. For more than twenty years they've been delivering goods for most major industries in the nation, with business booming as they traversed the country, in all kinds of weather, for all kinds of clients. During the heady times from 2002 to 2007, Williamson was a top rated accounts receivable mastermind of the trucking industry. Very few customers were behind on their bills, and those customers who were late turned in their overdue payments within an acceptable time frame. The money was flowing, and times were great. It was just one year later, in 2008, when the economy in the United States took a sharp decline, and both large and small businesses started to notice the squeeze on their pocketbooks: everyone had suddenly gone silent. Business slowed to a crawl

. Worse still, it was noticed by Williamson in early 2008 that even though most of their loyal customers were on time with their payments, there were a few late bloomers who were starting to spread the disease. Spring changed to summer, summer changed to fall, and the CEO of Williamson, Chester Carr, was beginning to feel very uncomfortable indeed whenever he looked at their weekly Accounts Receivable reports. The numbers of clients who owed him back debt were growing. He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? When checking his bookkeeper's records this was definitely not the case. He thought perhaps that he was losing clients to a competitor who offered rock-bottom prices with little to no guarantee of quality performance, and that the folks who owed Williamson money had jumped ship and decided to leave him holding the bag.

. Perhaps they were unable to pay their debt to him, but were able to meet the costs of a lesser service. But after doing the cursory research for this and talking to friends in the field, he found that alas, no, customers of Williamson hadn't gone elsewhere. The had just gone!.To Chester Carr the situation looked desperate. Chester was very concerned, because there were constant overheads, goods to ship, employees to pay, and trucks which needed to be maintained, but there just wasn't the money coming back into the business. After work he would confide in his wife, Gina, and neither were unable to stop the constant worry over the lack of funds.""I have a bad feeling, Lin,"" he would say with deep woe.""Well, what do you think it is?"" she would say.Chester would stare off for a moment and then close eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them traveling, bringing goods to all of his clients. But then a haze would cover his trucks and his vast fleet would vanish to leave just a few. What on earth was happening to create the death of his business?""I think I know what it could be,"" Chester said. ""I've relied too long on the profits I receive from invoices alone. For too long I've been allowing our clients to let their accounts become overdue."" All Gina could do was hold his hand and look at him tenderly. 'We know it's a difficult economy at the moment - perhaps it will take a while for people to get on top of their bills'.""Chester knew very well that Gina was only trying to help, but his responsibilities weighed heavily on his shoulders and he knew he had better do something soon to resolve this situation. The following day Chester walked into his office with a spring in his step, determined to call each and every client who owed money to Williamson Truck & Haul. Now, it wasn't the most efficient way to spend a day as a chief executive, what he really needed to be doing was to be overseeing all of the other intricacies of shipment and delivery and reaching out to prospective clients or retraining his sales team to do the same. But, he felt like he was doing something proactive to help his business, even though he had staff on salary to do just that thing. Wasting money, wasting time - even with the best of intentions, Chester knew that he was in trouble.

Poor Chester spent the whole morning trying in vain to contact his debtors: they promised to call back, dodged his calls, or made small interest-only payments. He was beginning to feel quite despaired when his secretary knocked on his door.

""Chester, can I have a word?"" she asked standing in the doorway.

""Sure thing Beth, come on in."" Chester relaxed back into his chair and looked up at Betherley.""Well Chester, this afternoon I did some research, trying to work out how we're going to get out of this mess."" She pulled a small stack of papers from a folder and set them on the desk before him.""Have you ever heard the word factoring?"" she asked.""It does sound vaguely familiar. What is factoring""? he asked.""Well,"" she began, ""Its actually quite simple really.

So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""Chester interrupted ""Immediately?"".""Immediately, yes"" she added, ""It's actually very simple. We can have an expert account manager review our numbers and help us complete a company profile. Included in the profile would be the investigation of our accounts receivable aging reports, our current customers' credit limits etc.. Additionally, the factoring will help to determine the creditworthiness of our customers independent of their credit history with our business. Its a broad view.Chester replied cautiously ""I see - and what happens then?Following the completion of their review and once we've been approved for a contract with the factoring company, then we sit down to negotiate conditions and terms. Theres a lot of flexibility depending on the business volume and credit histories. The company will advise us the cost to purchase factoring for our company's accounts receivable. We come to an agreement and the funding starts pouring out.Leaning forward, Chester studied the documents very closely.""It sounds too good to be true, Beth,"" he said.""Yes, I know; that's exactly what I thought at the beginning. But think about it, Chester: they've guaranteed that experts will do all the paperwork, and that will free us up to do what we should be doing - focusing on our customers in good standing, and that kind of stuff. And they're flexible Chester,"" she underlined a paragraph on the paper before him.""Just how flexible?"" asked Chester.""It seems that they personalize their factoring charges so that the amount they're prepared to work with is commensurate with our client's debt and our needs. Apparently they can figure this all out in two to four days.

""""It does all sound pretty good, remembering that we're all tapped out now with loans from the bank last year to repair vehicles, and we all know just how tight money is. It's imperative that we keep the business rolling as usual, and every day we go unpaid we're getting closer and closer to dealing with some serious issues in both the short term and the long term,"" said Chester. He took a deep breath and looked at his secretary with something she recognized as hope.""Precisely. This could very well be the answer to resolving the problems we're having with these clients who still owe us money.""Chester thought about this and agreed with Betherley. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Williamson. Just because they were experiencing difficulties paying their own bills now, Chester was very concerned about losing these relationships. Chester knew only too well that the whole economy was floundering, and that it was not going to change overnight. That unknown amount of time could create a disaster situation for both of them if he wasn't careful in how these debtors were handled. He didn't want to lose business but he also didn't want to lose any more money.""Let me go over this tonight Beth, and thankyou."" Beth nodded, stood up and left the office feeling that she had helped her employer keep on his shirt and hers too.Chester sat behind his desk and looked over the details Beth had not mentioned in their meeting. What other issues could freight factoring help Williamson with? Running his pencil down the sheet, he noted that the freight factoring company could assist with fuel costs, fuel advances, and fuel discount cards. Chester was surprised: it said that his company could get up to fifty percent cash advances on load pickups. Chester was a typical business man: he despised binding contracts that didn't allow room to breathe, so he was pleasantly surprised to see that the factoring company didn't require a long term contract, that there was no minimum volume required, and that there were no sign-up fees.""I must tell Clayton the good news,"" muttered Chester to himself.Clayton is Chester's son-in-law, and he really admired the ideas behind Williamson, so much so that only two years before he had started his own transportation service business. Chester knew then what struggles Clayton would face but he encouraged him nonetheless. With the faltering economy, if a big fish like Williamson was hurting, a little guy like Clayton was about to catch his death. But, an antidote may have been found in freight factoring and Chester was soon to find out.A few months later after going through the entire application process and having the experts review his accounts receivable, credit history and statements, Chester found himself beginning to dig his way out of the hole his delinquent account holders had created for him. They took on reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped spending their precious man hours scrambling to collect debt. They used that time to refocus their efforts in being competitive in new territories. Chester looked back on the dismal months of life before freight factoring and almost shuddered at the thought. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

The Future of a Trucking Company, and Factoring The phone was ringing on his desk, and Joshuauaua Gonzalez just sat there letting it ring. He let his morning coffee cool and left his cigarette to ash itself in the tray, because he is trying to make the biggest decision ever for his trucking company. Gonzalez Trucking Company had reached a turning point and he now had to make a decision as to whether he should sign up with a factoring company, and indeed if this would be a good or regrettable decision for his business.

More than forty years ago Joshuauaua's father had started this business working as an owner-operator and eventually growing Gonzalez Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Joshuauaua's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had lived long enough to witness the price of hires drop during the recession and watch the eruption of fuel prices afterwards. But now things were different: the company was in Joshuauaua's hands and he needed to ensure that this business would be left in great shape for his sons.

To move Gonzalez Trucking Company ahead into the future, he needed a steady cash flow but there was just not enough money to go around. His employees needed to be paid. They had families and household bills too. Some of the refrigerated trailers were in need of repairs and he felt to stay competitive it was also a good idea to invest in specialized haulers to be ready for the constant requests he was getting for loads of new energy and agriculture equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Gonzalez Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Joshuauaua chuckled, thinking about his father. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? Also his father had the habit of teasing all the drivers he caught switching into automatic even though driving in automatic was much more efficient though not manly in his fathers eyes. He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Joshuauaua knew he was right in his forward thinking. What would be the next step for Gonzalez Trucking? And how would he be able to afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. Thankfully he'd just finished paying off the bank loan for the installation of satellite radio in the trucks.

He wondered about factoring - was this the answer for him? If he was being honest, he didn't really understand how it all worked. It sounded like a ninth grade math problem and he wondered how this would fit into the trucking business. A factoring company actually purchases your invoices and takes control of your accounts receivable, payment being a certain percentage of the amount invoiced. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without this assistance, you're placed in the position of waiting for payment from your customers, and this can often be thirty days, or more. During those thirty days the trucking company can't pay its employees and bills with invoices.

Joshuauaua had to really consider what his next step was going to be. He had heard of companies charging for same day money transfers, advancing a percentage of the money owed to your business, while the rest is held in a private account if the bill wasn't paid within sixty or more days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His colleague, Ronnie, who owned a trucking company in Missouri, was nearly destroyed by a factoring company who charged him the full freight bill on top of the fees for factoring. Well, what was the point of going to a factoring company if there was shady business like that going on?

But it turned out to be quite easy. When he called the factoring companies he discovered they were very open about their business practices, and very friendly and helpful. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He was quite happy to sign an exclusive contract. In fact, he was quite pleased with the idea of a long-term contract because he knew this was a one-off and he wouldn't have to keep going back and forth to different companies. He was not charged for a credit check, and in addition he was offered a fuel advance on the pick-up of a load. Many companies offered a non-recourse factoring program that suited him just fine. He was more than happy with the figures he was offered in percentage terms on the freight bills. It sounded like a great scheme to him.

For Joshuauaua it was quite a relief to be dealing with the factoring company. They were extremely helpful and more personable than the bank staff. It seemed as though those bank people spoke another language, but these factoring guys knew the trucking business and spoke to him like a client, not like a beggar for a handout. The factoring companies were not interested in his credit nor the financial problems his father had experienced in the past. Factoring was based on the credit of his customers and on their reliability which worked well for Joshuauaua because he and his father had built up good strong relationships over decades with their list of clients. So he knew they would understand when the factoring company contacted them for the invoices. His clients wouldnt think poorly of Gonzalez Trucking and the factoring companies appeared capable of handling the accounts receivable in the same polite manner that his father had used over the years.

Feeling happier now, Joshuauaua stepped out of his office to advise his secretary to expect to receive the contract very shortly from the factoring company. He felt exhilarated by the new possibilities that would make the future of the company fun again and put the stress of the difficult times behind him. With the capabilities of this new cash flow, Joshuauaua could actually expand Gonzalez Trucking Company further across the country and perhaps even go international into Canada. His heart felt full knowing his sons wouldnt have to worry about money because of the right decisions he had made for their trucking business.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So, this is not a loan? Dale Ward asked as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs. The woman sitting across the desk from Dale smiled at him, shaking her head. Not quite, she said.Dale Ward owned a small trucking company, and his business had recently fallen on difficult times. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Tyler. He named his business Bailey Trucking, named after Charles and Nicholas, his two grandfathers. Both of these men had been very hardworking and had set a great example for Tyler.Six months ago disaster struck Tyler's business when two out of his fleet of fifteen trucks were taken off the road.

One was involved in a very costly accident, and the other simply rolled over, and headed to the trucking graveyard. Dale depended on his full fleet, and missing two trucks was devastating . Furthermore, buying a whole new truck and fixing the other simply took more cash than Dale had on hand.A big problem a lot of trucking companies came across was how bills were paid in the industry. Waiting a month or longer for bills to be paid was quite normal. In the long run, this wasnt an issue, but if problems arose, you could find yourself in trouble.Dale was an excellent business man, and he certainly hadn't done anything wrong. Things had happened that he couldn't have predicted, and he had to figure out a way to keep his business from hurting, or even going under.Thats where the woman across the desk came in. Her name was Bernice and she worked for a factoring company. Dale had come across her company as he sat in his office late one night, pouring over the internet for some solution to his problem long after his employees had gone home.Bernice explained. Its not a loan, we purchase your accounts receivable. We arent giving you money to be paid back later, were buying something from you, and you can buy it back when you can. That way were protected from a complete loss, but youre protected from the outrageous fees you would find in a loan from the bank.Dale nodded. It sounded good to him, almost too good. The woman laughed. I'm not sure that you believe me, she said.Oh no, I do: it just sounds too good to be true. I actually thought I might end up losing my business.Bernice nodded. We get that a lot. Listen, Id hate to see you lose your company. We know how hard you work, and that you've invested everything in your business. Sometimes you need help. Thats what were here for.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. Its right down the road, usually we do it all online, but I didnt mind swinging on by today, Bernice said with a smile. Let's work out a solution to your problem. And right there and then they created a business profile. Dale filled the form out, with Bernice available to help him if he needed it. The completed profile gave Bernice and her company all the information they needed on Tyler's business, and with this information they would determine if this business would in fact be suitable for Factoring. Unfortunately, not all companies are. Some were beyond factoring special brand of help, and sometimes things werent even dire enough for it. As Dale completed his form, Bernice listened to his story and she felt quite sure he would be the ideal candidate for Factoring. When the form was done Bernice took it and slid it into her briefcase. Standing up, she reached over the desk and shook Tyler's hand. He stood before they shook as well, and then smiled. Dale walked Bernice to the door where they said 'Goodbye', then he went back into his office. All his staff members were there, all seven who worked in his office. Sitting behind his desk once more he could hear the familiar sounds of his office workers going about their daily business. He shut his eyes. He felt so drained: he had been flailing helplessly for so long, he just knew his business was going to collapse and probably take him with it. Talking to Bernice though, learning about factoring, it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He relaxed into his chair, running his hand through his thick black hair with its telling streaks of grey. All those long, sleepless nights. The sudden panic attacks, not matter where he was. He could feel it all fading away. He knew it wasn't over yet and that there was still a way to go, but he could just feel everything start to change for him. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems.Dale couldnt help but think back to when he had first started the business. At twenty-two and straight out of school he had opened a restaurant. It had been really successful. Home cooking in his hometown, and he had done very well. But he had gotten bored. His passion didnt lie with the food industry. He thought about it for a long time, then decided it was time to sell his restaurant. He took half a year off, and in that time he thought to start Bailey Trucking. So he did it. Once again he built a company from the ground up. The business had been an instant success. Then disaster! The two trucks went down and suddenly his success wasn't looking so guaranteed. He was nearing fifty. He was concerned that he just didn't have the energy left to try and save the business. But giving up wasn't part of his personality either.

The idea of cutting his losses, shutting down, laying off his workers, it actually made him sick some nights. He didn't want to quit - both for himself and for his staff members. And now, because of factoring, he was sure he wouldnt have to. Tyler's eyes opened, he sat forward in his chair and turned on his computer. He had lots to do. He could be thankful later, for now, it was time to work.

After all, how many businesses have two months cash flow just occupying there to cover all their bills till they earn?

This is primarily true of truck agencies. They generally handle tons of invoices which means a considerable quantity of collection time involves business owner themselves. Attempting to get paid off in time can come to be an amazing struggle and this is the key reasons why you use truck factoring agencies who are thrilled to help out truckers primarily.

As most of us know, trucking is an exceptionally massive business with lots of companies out there hiring hundreds of vehicle drivers. Unfortunately, several of these drivers wind up in cash troubles considering that they are still expecting work from six weeks ago to actually pay them. When this is the condition for a trucking firm, turning to factoring firms for solutions might be the finest choice left.

This indicates that a truck company can pay off the salaries of the workers, keep all the cars filled with gas and continue to surmount, develop and expand without continually waiting for the finances which is taking too long to come in. Trucking Enterprises functioning without a factoring program put in place are leaving themselves at notable risk, as competitions cash out promptly and continue to broaden.

There's absolutely almost nothing to be distressed about when it comes to using a Factoring agency-- they aren't like a banking company or any individual who is going to leave you with a big stack of financial debt to repay. You give them authentic invoices from work you have already completed , you are just expediting the payment process.

In the United States, where truck firms develop, factoring establishments are not considered taking on loan in any capacity. This confidential arrangement then allows both parties to make money and experience a good future-- it gives the factoring company a warranted asset of earnings to include in the list and it supplies the trucking business the needed cash that they sweated to generate.

The trucking establishment bestows their accounts to the factoring agency. The trucking factoring business then take the payments from the trucking company's clients. Factoring has been in existence for centuries and has been utilized for long times by a lot of varying industries-- but none much more so than truckers. While you could lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending upon who you deal with, it means that you are obtaining the finances today and can actually start putting the cash to operate.

Once and for all, an IOU or an invoice is not actually going to cover expenditures, is it? For trucking firms when the income can be very good one day and gone the next, it's up to the drivers to work sensibly and to ascertain they are leaving themselves with a significant measure of time and money to get through the week till they are paid once more.

So the next occasion your trucking establishment is enduring some momentary capital troubles and you are investing an excessive amount of time chasing slowly paying clienteles, why not start off thinking about utilizing a factoring businesses as a means to get your finances and give yourself a more at ease future in the eyes of your trucking team and your bank dividend?

Traditional Bank Loans

Bank loans are an extremely traditional way for a business to get financing. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. For example, a fairly newly established business simply may not have the assets to readily get a loan from a bank, even if they do, the standard collateral for a business loan is the business itself, which means that if you cannot make your loan payment, you risk losing your entire business. In addition, while you apply for a certain loan amount, that is all the financing you are entitled to. Of course, once that loan has been re-paid, you can always re-apply for another loan.

Trucking Factoring Companies

Trucking Factoring companies do not give loans, and the money you get from the Trucking Factoring company does not put you in debt. Rather the financing you receive from a Trucking Factoring company is based on money your business has already earned, but have not yet received. The Trucking Factoring company purchases your accounts receivable, or part of them, for a certain percentage of their value - this is normally about 80-95%. The amount of money you can receive is based on the amount of money you have earned and the accounts receivable you are willing to sell. Once you have set up Trucking Factoring account it continues as long as you wish it too and the amount of money available to you even can grow as your business grows, giving you the ready cash you need to meet your own obligations.

Benefits of a Trucking Factoring Company Vs. A Bank Loan

While not every business can take advantage of Trucking Factoring account financing (you have to have a business that has account receivables) for those that can use this type of financing there are several distinct benefits.

1. You Won't Incur Debt. Since the Trucking Factoring company actually buys your accounts receivable you don't actually incur debt like you do with a bank loan. One of the main benefits of this kind of financing is that your business credit rating and your personal credit rating won't be affected. Should the unforeseeable happen and your business fails, you won't have to worry about anyone coming after your personal as well as your business assets to pay off a loan. With a bank loan, the debt goes onto your credit report, and even one late payment can adversely affect your businesses credit, and even the ability to get insurance and may even reflect upon your personal credit rating.

2. There's no collateral required. Another great benefit of using the services of a Trucking Factoring company instead of a bank loan is that there is no collateral required for the Trucking Factoring company, because the Trucking Factoring company is 'buying' your accounts receivables. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This makes it easier for fledgling businesses to get the financing they need through a Trucking Factoring company (as long as their accounts receivables are in good order) then from a bank, who may not feel that you have been in business long enough to be worth the risk of issuing you a loan.

3. You'll receive the money faster. With a Trucking Factoring company you can actually get the money you need faster. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. Borrowing from a bank begins with vast amounts of paperwork, the loan must be underwritten, and this can take ages before you're notified if the loan has been approved.

4.You receive interest up-front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So not only are you relieved of those monthly loan payments, but you also don't have to worry about the building up of interest, as every penny in the account is yours to spend on the business.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. In addition, there are other benefits that a Trucking Factoring company can offer you, outside the scope of a bank. The main benefit is that once you've sold your accounts receivable to the Trucking Factoring company, you are free from having to collect money owed by your customers. The Trucking Factoring company takes over that chore, since it is now their money to collect. Trucking Factoring companies are very efficient at debt collecting, and this frees up your valuable time to devote to running your company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay.A Trucking Factoring company is not the only method of gaining access to finance for the running and growing of your business, however it does offer a financing option well worth considering.
